In His Image Family Medicine Residency Program is a Christian, community-based, family medicine training program fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
For over five years running, all IHI graduating residents have passed the ABFM boards exam on their first attempt.
Our primary teaching hospital is St. John Medical Center, a major tertiary referral center in Tulsa. We have a very active family medicine inpatient service to which we admit patients from obstetrics and newborn through geriatric adults and everyone in between.
We also provide medical consultations for surgical patients, both on a preoperative and postoperative basis. This service is run by our residents under the supervision of our attending physicians.
Our family medicine clinic is excellent. All our residents, Post Graduate Years (PGY) 1, 2, and 3, are in clinic on a regular basis and care for many patients. The patient mix is multi-cultural with a variety of private pay, self-pay, Medicaid, and Medicare patients.
Our clinic is fully equipped with x-ray and laboratory capabilities, ultrasound, and dedicated spaces for OMT, for high-quality care and patient satisfaction.

Areas of Concentration
All residents complete an extensive set of educational requirements prior to graduation. For those who desire additional preparation in particular fields, we offer optional areas of concentration that allow residents to pursue deeper learning in areas of interest. Each area includes specific curricular components, a longitudinal experience plan, and mentorship from a dedicated faculty coordinator.
Residents may pursue up to three areas of concentration during residency. Those who complete the requirements receive special recognition at graduation, including a certificate for each area completed.

Domestic Outreach
Following Jesus’s example and command to love our neighbors, In His Image established Good Samaritan Health Services (GSHS) to partner in reaching out to underserved individuals and families in need in the greater Tulsa area. During residency, In His Image residents help provide free, high-quality medical care while sharing the hope and love of Christ with these patients.
GSHS has multiple clinic sites in the metropolitan area and uses two Mobile Medical Units (a 35-foot unit, as well as a 60-foot Mobile Medical Unit equipped with three exam rooms, a pharmacy, and a lab) to reach those who cannot afford medical attention or who experience difficulty accessing healthcare.
IHI residents and faculty work alongside other compassionate Christian health professionals and over two hundred caring volunteers from area churches who share the desire to see the people in our local communities healed in all areas of life— physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

In His Image has a strong emphasis on international health and residents have the opportunity to complete up to four international rotations during residency.
In His Image International (IHII), a medical missions organization formed by In His Image to help reach the nations, is our primary partner in taking medical care and the love of God to the far reaches of our hurting world.
Focusing on international medical education and healthcare, IHII’s areas of service include international rotations for In His Image residents, crisis response, establishing and supporting international physician training programs, and mobilizing missionary physicians through their sending agency. IHII’s Sending Agency is available for In His Image graduates who choose to serve in full-time international outreach.

Technology Allowance and Continuing Medical Education
The Technology Allowance of $2,250 total may be used during the PGY1 year or saved for later. This may be used for computer, smart phone, tablet, etc. PGY2 and PGY3 residents may request five days/year and up to $1,000 reimbursement per year for approved CME.
Annual three-week vacation and up to five sick days. PGY2 and PGY3 residents interested in international or domestic medical missions may learn on-site up to two months per year. Faculty personally supervise education on various two-week international trips and can assist in locating longer rotations.

American Academy of Family Physicians, Oklahoma State License Fee, DEA License, County & State Medical Association, Christian Medical and Dental Associations (CMDA). Total value over $1,000 per year.
Clinical lab coats, parking, certifications in ACLS, ATLS, ALSO, NRP, and PALS. A food allowance is available when assigned to hospital rotations. The residency also offers spiritual support through two retreats each year, a weekly Bible study for residents/faculty/spouses/families and a bi-weekly group for spouses of residents and faculty.

We integrate faith into every aspect of our lives, including medical training and practice. We turn to God for answers, rely on His strength when delivering difficult news and thank Him openly for miracles He performs in our patients. During the in-patient service, the team has devotions and worship each morning. Residents learn how to take spiritual histories and provide whole person care.

Our multifaceted support system is the most consistent strength identified by our residents in their exit interviews. We seek to provide practical support, including educational, financial and patient care resources. Our carefully designed support creates a foundation for community between the residents and faculty. This is achieved through a two-week orientation; Winter and Summer retreats; group Bible studies with faculty, residents and/or their spouses; intentional mentoring and faculty/behavioral advisory relationships. In addition to practical and structural support, In His Image desires that each resident be provided excellent personal support. Through mentoring, counseling and marriage support, our residents are provided assistance in balancing their personal and professional commitments.

During your three years in residency, you will have several elective months to select your own rotations. These may include local or out-of-town urban, inner city or rural rotations or international health clinical experiences. You will also have the opportunity to switch rotations with your classmates as needed.

Call during your first year is only on our inpatient service and that is two to three weekend days a month. To have time to get involved in a local church, PGY1s rarely work on Sundays. Call for second and third-year residents averages twice a month, plus one evening per month on Good Samaritan Health Services mobile medical clinic. We believe in balance. Though you’ll work hard, our on-call schedule is designed to allow time for family, spiritual growth, exercise, and recreation. Also, our attendings are available 24/7 during hospital call.

We offer many opportunities for family fellowship involving spouses and children, as well as activities for our numerous single residents. You can look forward to weekly Bible studies (spouses welcome and childcare provided) and frequent get-togethers including holiday celebrations and Winter and Summer retreats. In short, we believe that if we expect you to be sensitive to the needs of your patients, we must help meet the emotional and spiritual needs of you and your family.

Family Leave is in addition to vacation days and sick days and is for:
The birth and care of a newborn, adopted, or foster child, including both birth- and non-birth parents of a newborn.
The care of a family member with a serious health condition, including end of life care
A resident’s own serious health condition requiring prolonged evaluation and treatment
At IHI, Family Leave may be granted up to four weeks per event for a maximum of six weeks allowed during residency (without extending residency). In addition to the above, upon approval a resident may also do two weeks of the IHI Parent-Newborn Health Elective.
